City of Kawartha Lakes: Growth with endless possibilities
UEM, in association with MHBC planning consultants, is assisting the City of Kawartha Lakes in addressing the Terms of Reference for their Municipal Master Plan Project. The initial component of this project is the development of a Growth Management Strategy to document land needs and develop an approach for the Master Plan to conform with the Ontario’s Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe and other applicable policies including the Provincial Policy Statement and the Greenbelt Plan. The second component of this Master Plan is to evaluation servicing requirements for the future growth areas which will be determined based on the Ontario “Places to Grow” legislation as well as infrastructure affordability and environmental sustainability. This comprehensive study will support the goals of the City of Kawartha Lakes to maintain a high quality of life in the future, provide for economic development, and encourage housing choices to meet the needs of Kawartha Lakes’ communities. UEM’s expertise in related areas of engineering is sought after and we will be working with Kawartha Lakes to provide more services that will help the city accommodate the projected growth expected in the coming years.

Greenwich Mohawk Brownfield Site
UEM has completed the first phase of the Greenwich Mohawk Brownfield site remediation and redevelopment. In June 2009, Brantford selected the right proponent to remediate and redevelop the site. Now In Phase 2 of the Greenwich Mohawk Brownfield project, UEM is involved in assisting the City of Brantford in the negotiations with the chosen private partner.
Our team assisted in the RFQ and RFP process to arrive at a qualified proponent from the private sector that has the capability to complete the project in a manner that best meets the objectives of the community. UEM is the overall project and process manager and is responsible for the public and community consultation and engagement. Our team is also providing land use planning expertise. The City of Brantford Council is mandated to direct the remediation and redevelopment of this site through public/private participation. The 50-acre brownfield site is located in the Southeast area of Brantford. There are 3 properties bisected by the Toronto, Hamilton, and Buffalo (TH&B) Railway Spur line. Identified as a priority for municipal investment to initiate private sector interest, Brantford has obtained financial support in the amount of $12 million from the Federal Government and $5 million from the Province of Ontario for the redevelopment of the lands. There has been considerable interest shown by the private sector in participating in the redevelopment of these lands.

UEM lands Watermains Project for The Region of Peel
The Region of Peel recently awarded UEM the project to conduct Class Environmental Assessment and Detailed Design for watermains in various locations within the City of Brampton. For this project, UEM will provide Preliminary Design and Detailed Design for 13 separate watermains. Other specific tasks to be performed as needed include: geotechnical work, hydrogeology, structural engineering, landscape design, and CAD support. Out of the 13 watermain projects, seven are for residential areas and six of which are located in commercial/industrial areas. In total, approximately 5,600 metres of watermain replacement. The watermains range in size from 150 mm to 400 mm diameter and from 71 metres to 1,098 meters in length. There is no contract administration or site observation required as part of this project. However, support during tender and construction will be provided as requested by Peel. The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the present watermain service connections, the many utility installations and how this impacts the flow of traffic and the public in the given locations. One of the challenges is to arrive at the best solution to allow decommissioning of the existing watermains and replacement with the new distribution main. This assignment started in June 2009 and tenders for the work are expected to be completed in December 2009. Leading this project from UEM is Tony Barton, P.Eng. from our GTA office. He is supported by George Wagenaar, P.Eng. and Elizabeth Hinton, B. Eng.
